well it might depend on the nail polish i use. what brand did you use? cause mine like wouldn't even spread in the water. :p

I use Golden Rose, but the main thing you mustn't forget is that nail polish should be as new as possible (new ones spread better in water), the water must be room temperature and filtered (if you dont have a water filter, you could use bottled water):D

oh wow, i dont have filtered water! and my nailpolish is all like 6-2 years old. i only have like 3 shades from this year

Yeah,the more water is cleaner the better will polish spread. I have a filter, but if u dont have u can use bottled one, or just boil it :D
Yeah, the more dense they are its harder to work. I had few moments where i wanted to put a drop on the surface of water, and it turned into a drop and fell to the bottom o.O
